In our modern world, we often move at such a fast pace we end up ignoring key signals from our body to our brain.
These signals can be infrequent, subtle or perhaps more pronounced such as chronic back pain.
Yoga and meditation cultivate sensory awareness and turn our attention inwards.
Externally, we are continuously bombarded by the distractions of life. Which is why it’s SO important we take time to pause and truly check in with how we’re really feeling – mentally, physically and emotionally.
I haven’t always been so in tune with my mind-body connection. And I do have days, where I still struggle to be in stillness – it’s part of being human. Often it’s easier to remain distracted, rather than take time to notice and observe the sensations of your body and mind. There are days it’s hard not to get caught up in the swirling thoughts and long list of to-do’s…
But, once I committed to a consistent yoga practice (a lifestyle really), I noticed the chronic back pain I endured for years after suffering an injury as a child gymnast began to disappear.
I was also less anxious, able to handle stressful situations with more ease. I slept more soundly and could think more clearly.
Yoga and meditation became my tools. Tools to gain mobility, develop strength and build resiliency. And over time I learned how to cultivate my mind-body connection using the power of our breath.
Don’t be fooled by the seeming simple breathing exercises. Intentional breathwork is impactful. It can signal to our body a sense of safety. When we feel safe, we can relax more easily. Certain types of mindful breathing allow us to tap into our parasympathetic nervous system (the body’s necessary rest and recover response).
Scientific research (I love to geek out on science!) continues to validate why these ancient practices offer a myriad of health benefits.
Aren’t you just a little bit curious what all the fuss is about?
If so, I’d love to help and be your guide!
